Swine Flu in MexicoM. H. West realizes that you are concerned with the recent swine flu events and want to stay up-to-date with accurate information. There are several links on VAPHA’s home page – VDH (including Dr. Remley’s letter to health care providers), CDC (English and Spanish swine flu sites; guidance for clinicians and public health professionals, travel alerts), Mexico’s Secretary of Health and WHO. In addition, VAPHA’s website brings in rss feeds (latest developments) on swine flu from CDC every five minutes.

Top 25 Women in Healthcare

Crystal HaynesModern Healthcare named Crystal Haynes, chief executive officer of Saint Louis University Hospital, Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, and Angela Braly, president and CEO of WellPoint, to the magazine’s national list of the “Top 25 Women in Healthcare” for 2009.

Haynes has served as CEO for Saint Louis University Hospital (SLU Hospital) since 2001. The 365-bed, urban, academic medical center is owned by Tenet Healthcare Corp., employs 1,600 people and treats more than 2,200 trauma cases a year. She also is the first woman to ever chair a regional policy board for the American Hospital Association. (more…)

Healthcare Research Highlights for April
Task Force Recommends Using Aspirin to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease When the Benefits Outweigh the Harms
The U.S Preventative Services Task Force found solid evidence that aspirin decreases first heart attacks in men and first strokes in women. The new recommendations have been made that offer more specific guidance about benefits and harms to specific age groups and sex-specific benefits. It is recommended that men 45 to 79 should use aspirin to lower their risk for heart attacks when the benefits outweigh the harms for potential gastrointestinal bleeding. (more…)

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Impact on Primary Education

State Fiscal Stabilization Fund
The economic recovery bill creates a “State Fiscal Stabilization Fund” to help state and local governments avoid budget cuts. The Stabilization Fund provides a $39.5-billion grant earmarked for education and an $8.8-billion grant to help fund other key services.
(The Stabilization Fund also includes about $5 billion for incentive grants and other purposes, for a total of $53.6 billion.)

How the Money is Allocated to Each State
Sixty-one percent of the funds are allocated by each state’s population aged 5 to 24. The remaining 39 percent of funds are allocated based on total state population. Out of each state’s allocation based on these measures, 81.8 percent is reserved for the education block grant, and 18.2 percent is considered the “flexible” grant. (more…)
