47th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner Attended by WEST Colleagues

Virginia Center for Inclusive CommunitiesThe Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities held their 47th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner at the Richmond Marriott on October 27th. M. H. West & Co., Inc.’s CEO, Marilyn West is proud to serve on the Steering Committee for The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and has been supporting the organization for years. Marilyn attended the dinner along with fellow associates Eugene Sampey, Julian House and Erica Cage.

The dinner celebrated “Inclusive Leadership” and some of Richmond’s most outstanding community leaders were present. Among those honored included: Viola Baskerville, Peter Bernard, Hugh F. Gouldthorpe Jr. and Alexander Lebenstein. Allix B. James received the Jeffrey B. Spence Award for Interfaith Understanding. St. Joseph’s Villa, which has been helping Richmond area children in need since 1834, received the Distinguished Merit Citation.

WEST’s Julian House enjoyed the dinner and found it inspiring that so many of Richmond’s influential leaders were active in promoting diversity in the community.

Richmond Jazz Society Welcomes Al Foster Home

Al FosterThe Al Foster Quartet performed at the Capital Ale House as part of the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educator Series on October 13th. Foster’s quartet consists of saxophonist Eli Degibri , bassist Doug Weiss and pianist Adam Birnbaum. The group had just returned from touring Europe.

Al Foster was born in Richmond, VA on January 18, 1943 and moved with his family to NY when he was a child. His influences include jazz luminaries John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich and Philly Joe Jones. Foster has become an internationally renowned drummer and composer having performed and/or recorded with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Michael Brecker, John Scofield and others. The concert marked Foster’s first visit back to his hometown.

M. H. West & Co. Inc., is a proud member of the Richmond Jazz Society. Marilyn West was thrilled that the Richmond Jazz Society was able to bring such a renowned artist back to his hometown for people to enjoy in an intimate setting.

WEST Associates Attend Third Annual Awards of Excellence

M. H. West & Co., Inc. (WEST) participated as a proud Supporting Sponsor when the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) held its the Third Annual Awards of Excellence on October 1, 2009 at the Richmond Marriott. The mission of the fund is “to develop and prepare a new generation of leaders by providing resources, opportunities, advocacy and scholarships to public Historically Black Colleges and Universities, students and alumni”.  The membership consists of forty-seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Staff and consultants attending on behalf of WEST included Marilyn West, Chairman & CEO, William House, Julian House and Corliss Archer.

The event included impressive testimonials given by  six students matriculating at Virginia State University and Norfolk State University. All  the presenting students had attended the TMCF leadership training conference and each possessed high academic credentials.  During the evening these talented young men and women shared their future career aspirations with the attendees.

Also honored were five community leaders for their outstanding contributions.  Each leader received a beautiful bronze bust of Thurgood Marshall.  The honorees are were Edward L. Hamm, Founder, President & CEO, E.L. Hamm & Associates, The Honorable Tim Kaine, Governor, Commonwealth of Virginia, G. Gilmer Minor, III, Chairman, Board of Directors, Owens & Minor, Inc., Eddie N. Moore, Jr., President, Virginia State University, and Dianne L. Reynolds-Cane, M.D., Medical Director, The Daily Planet Health Care for the Homeless Medical Clinic.

WEST Colleagues Show Support for “United for UNOS”

United for UNOS“United for UNOS” was both a 25th Anniversary celebration and a fundraiser for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. WEST associates who attended the event, which was held at The Colony Club, included: Marilyn H. West, Eugene Sampey, Corliss Archer, Julian House, Erica Cage and Joe Armstrong.

Highlights of the evening included a raffle featuring many items from local retailers such as The Colony Club, Omni Hotel, Beecroft and Bull, Silpada Jewelry, Haley Pontiac GMC and an original watercolor painted by Dr. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. and two round trip airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S., donated especially for the event. Also during the evening, was an inspiring speech by Dr. Robert S.D. Higgins, M.D., MSHA, who flew in from Chicago to support UNOS. A performance by donor family member, Tammy Griffin,  a special tribute to her fiancé, who died in 1997 while waiting for a heart, and cousin, who received a liver transplant in 2001 capped off the night’s festivities.

“United for UNOS” had a clear message that organ donation is a noble act that not only saves the life of the organ recipient but also greatly enhances the lives of everyone who is close to the recipient. Marilyn West, who serves on the President’s Council for UNOS, was pleased that so many of her associates chose to support the event.

CenterStage Makes Its Debut

Carpenter TheatreRichmond CenterStage made its long-awaited debut on Saturday. The audience, which was a sellout, was treated to performances by: African American Repertory Theatre, Elegba Folklore Society, the Richmond Ballet, the Richmond Jazz Society, Richmond Shakespeare, the Richmond Symphony, SPARC, Theatre IVBarksdale and the Virginia Opera. WEST’s own Corliss Archer attended the grand opening and came away very impressed with the venue, “I’m so happy that local performers have such a wonderful theater to call home now.” M. H. West & Co., Inc. has proudly contributed to CenterStage and looks forward to the many great performances to come.

Marilyn West Attends the 2009 National Medical Association Convention

National Medical AssociationFor the past 113 years, the National Medical Association (NMA) has conducted its Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly, the nation’s foremost conference devoted to medical science and African American health. Marilyn West, CEO of M.H. West & Co., Inc. was excited to exchange ideas with fellow experts at the convention.

The 2009 NMA Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly (held in Las Vegas from July 25th through July 29th), offered an exciting venue to interact with the largest spectrum of African American physicians, academicians and scientists in the country as well as other allied health professionals. Scientific presentations highlighted state-of the art research, new technologies, and practice management issues across twenty-five medical specialties.

Voices From the Field…A Success

Voices From the FieldM. H. West & Co., Inc. (WEST) recently designed and facilitated a 2nd Peer to Peer Exchange at the Renaissance Washington DC in conjunction with its TA and Coaching responsibilities associated with a gang prevention/intervention initiative of the ETA. Participating in the June 16-17 event were the leadership and education experts associated with the demonstration sites for the School District Initiative – Generation I Grantees in Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Milwaukee and Orlando . Also participating were the grantee Coaches, DYS leadership and WEST’s staff and education experts.

Voices From the Field to Build A Legacy that Helps Assure Bright Futures for Our Youth introduced best practices, methods and other resources currently used to assist at-risk youth succeed by staying in school, achieving academically, and establishing/pursuing employment and career goals. Also introduced at the two day meeting were new tools and emerging promising practices for responding to needs of the targeted youth and school district staff working with them. Continued use of the Peer to Peer Exchange model is anticipated in the upcoming 3rd Program year of the School District Initiative.

Gang Prevention Training a Success

West receives Margaret Bell Miller Leadership Award

The Margaret Bell Miller Leadership Award was presented to Marilyn H. West, Chairman and CEO of M.H. West & Co., Inc., at the annual celebration of the University’s Charter Day on March 24. Tuesday’s celebration marked the 159th anniversary of the University’s charter by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The award was presented by Waynesburg University President, Timothy R. Thyreen, and Chair of the Waynesburg University Board of Trustees, Ken Moore. (more…)
