2011 First Freedom Awards Gala

M. H. West & Co., Inc. representatives Marilyn West (CEO), Ned Conway and Meaghan West were in attendance for the 2011 First Freedom Awards Gala hosted by the First Freedom Center. Marilyn was honored to give the closing remarks for the black-tie event. This year’s award recipients were:

2011 INTERNATIONAL RECIPIENT – ASMA JAHANGIR
Asma Jahangir served as the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief from August 2004 – July 2010.  The Rapporteur is a senior authority appointed by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to investigate the status of religious freedom worldwide.  Jahangir is an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and has been twice elected as Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.  She is also a Director of the AGHS Legal Aid Cell, which provides free legal assistance to the needy, and was instrumental in the formation of the Punjab Women Lawyers Association in 1980 and the Women Action Forum in 1985. Happy Holidays to Bon Secours St. Mary’s Pediatric Unit

Continental Societies, Inc. – Richmond Chapter members Marilyn West, Aldora Turner, Allison Lawrence Jones, Dianne Bacon, Pauletta James and Christie Cooper along with M. H. West & Co., Inc. associates Tom Wilkinson, Julian House, Meaghan West, Joe Armstrong, Justin House and Brennan West all visited the pediatric unit at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital on December 21st. Everyone went with hopes of spreading a little holiday cheer to the children by singing carols, passing out gifts and reciting “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. However, it was the smiles on young faces that proved to be the best present of all; reminding everyone involved how special the spirit of the season can be.

So, happy holidays to all the children at St. Mary’s pediatric unit and to all the friendly, dedicated and hard working staff that take care of them.

Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce: Annual Meeting of the Membership

WEST CEO, Marilyn West and associates Michael Byrnes and Joe Armstrong attended the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce’s 26th Annual Meeting of the Membership on December 8 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.  The luncheon is Hampton Roads’ largest gathering of elected officials and business leaders. The crowd of 750 heard from keynote speaker Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

The Chamber of Commerce honored its outgoing 2010 volunteer leadership and recognized its and incoming 2011 volunteer leaders.  Nelson Adcock (GeoEnvironmental Resources, Inc.), who served as the Chamber’s 2010 Chair, will continue in this role in 2011.  During the luncheon, Adcock presented the Chamber’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award to Marino Santarelli (Wachovia, A Wells Fargo Company) for his hard work and dedication.  Santarelli served as Chair of the Chamber’s Sustainable Resources Campaign leading an all volunteer effort which raised 5% more than last year. Virginia State University’s Professional Enhancement Course

M. H. West & Co., Inc. associates Julian House, Erica Cage and Joe Armstrong recently participated as guest instructors at Virginia State University’s Reginald F. Lewis School of Business. They were invited as part of the Professional Enhancement Course. The course invites local business leaders to guide students through role playing exercises which helps them learn business skills. Julian, Erica and Joe were responsible for teaching their students about Cost-Benefit Analysis and Opportunity Cost.

The overall goal of the course is to aid students in becoming competitive in today’s dynamic environment by providing the necessary skills and resources they will need to enter the corporate arena and develop their career. All three WEST associates enjoyed the class and agreed that it represents an excellent opportunity for business students to get some real world advice in a classroom environment.

48th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities held their 48th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner at the Richmond Marriott on November 1st. M. H.  West & Co., Inc.’s CEO, Marilyn West is proud to serve on the Dinner Executive Committee for The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and has been supporting the organization for years. Marilyn attended the dinner along with fellow associates Joe Armstrong, Meaghan West and Erica Cage.

The Humanitarian Awards are presented to individuals and organizations that demonstrate a commitment to the promotion of respect and understanding among people of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Among those honored included: Tommy Baer, Maureen Massey, Ranjit K. Sen and Laverne B. Spurlock. John W. Kinney received the Jeffrey B. Spence Award for Interfaith Understanding. Elk Hill which provides a healthy environment for young people and their families to feel safe and make positive changes, received the Distinguished Merit Citation.

WEST’s Joe Armstrong enjoyed the dinner and found it noteworthy that Congressman Bobby Scott took the time to attend the awards ceremony on the eve of election day. Thus showing the importance of the event.

Dropped Out: How Our Students’ Futures Are Lost Every Day

On Wednesday, October 20th, 2010, the Legal Aid Justice Center and Master of Ceremonies John Grisham presented Dropped Out, a program that examined the school drop-out crisis, described incentives that caused it, explained strategies to address it, and discussed ways for concerned community members to get involved. Attending this event for M. H. West & Co., Inc. were Marilyn West, Meaghan West and Joe Armstrong.

Congressman Bobby Scott gave the keynote speech after being introduced by John Grisham. During his speech he emphasized the importance of placing the best teachers in the most challenging situations where they are needed the most. He also noted that the current dropout rate is placing the United States at a disadvantage in the global marketplace, since well-educated workers are required to compete.

The evening’s events also included the film Pushed, a student-produced documentary that highlighted the effects of this crisis in our nation’s schools as seen through the eyes of students, parents and teachers in a Connecticut school division. The film was followed by a panel discussion by education experts: Professor Dewey Cornell,  Charlottesville Superintendent Dr. Rosa S. Atkins, JustChildren’s Director Angela Ciolfi and special guest panelist, Congressman Bobby Scott.

UNOS Event Offers An Evening of Education

WHAT’S HAPPENING Learning about the finer things in life — food, wine, art and working together to save lives — was the theme for the benefit hosted Oct. 8 by the United Network for Organ Sharing.

In the gallery at UNOS on Fourth Street downtown, 250 guests mingled with transplant families, donors and recipients and enjoyed dining on signature foods prepared by local chefs. Aromas of curried pumpkin bisque, herbed crusted lamb, Malaysian seafood curry, penne a la Vodka, mousse crab cakes, buffalo barbecue and pecan-encrusted trout filled the air. Each dish was paired with a unique Virginia wine from the Kluge Winery and Vineyard and, in keeping with the theme of recycling, food was served on dinnerware made from renewable resources.

Watercolor artist Dr. Baxter Perkinson was on hand showing his flair with canvas, colors and brushes. His art was on display as the inaugural exhibition in the gallery.

Attending this event for M. H. West & Co., Inc. were Marilyn West, Meaghan West and Radcliffe Chambers.  Marilyn is a member of the President’s Council for UNOS.

M. H. West Co., Inc associates Erica Cage and Meaghan West recently attended a presentation  hosted by River City Express on identity theft prevention. It is estimated that 1 out of 4 people in the U.S. will have their identity stolen. Richard Swed, Identity Theft Security Specialist with The Risk Management Group, discussed the 5 major areas of identity theft and give tips for protecting your identity. Below are 10 tips to keep your personal information safe:

  • 1.     Shred Financial Documents (or any paperwork with personal information)
  • 2.     Never Click on Links in Unsolicited E-mails
  • 3.     Do Not Use Obvious Passwords (i.e.: birthday, mother’s maiden name, SSN)
  • 4.     Never Carry Your Social Security Card in Your Wallet
  • 5.     Be Alert to Bills That Do Not Arrive When They Should
  • 6.     Respond Immediately to Calls or Letters About Purchases Made
  • 7.     Regularly Review Your Bank & Credit Card Statements
  • 8.     Check Your Credit Report Regularly
  • 9.     Unless Your Mailbox is Secure, Only Put Mail In A U.S. Postal Mailbox
  • 10.   Be Careful What Information You Put  On Social Media Sites

Senior Connections: 7th Annual Empty Plate Luncheon

Senior Connections held the 7th Annual Empty Plate Luncheon at the Science Museum of Virginia on October 13, 2010. The event honors those who have given outstanding service to the senior community of the greater Richmond metro area throughout the year. WEST associates Marilyn West, Justin House, Meaghan West, Erica Cage, Joe Armstrong, Ned Conway and Radcliffe Chambers attended the luncheon. Notable award winners included:

  • Dr. Richard W. Lindsay, M.D. – Eva Teig Hardy Service Award for Exceptional Corporate Support
  • James “Buddy” Kelly, Jr. – MaryEllen Cox Memorial Award for Advocacy
  • Charles Barker, Sr. – Richard Hogan Memorial Award for Service to Seniors
  • William R. Nelson, M.D. – E. Harris Spindle Award for Service To Seniors

After the award presentations, keynote speaker Hugh Gouldthorpe, Jr. gave an inspiring and humorous speech on the importance of staying humble and being passionate about your work. Marilyn West, Chair of the Senior Connections Advisory Council closed out the event by first noting the Mr. Gouldthorpe is a hard act to follow and then letting everybody know that she looked forward to seeing them next year.

The Beacon – Changing The Lives of At-Risk Youth

Every other week M. H. West & Co., Inc. publishes The Beacon with funding through the Employment and Training Administration. This newsletter is dedicated to changing the lives of at-risk youth. The map shows all broadband projects funded by USDA.  The Rural Utilities Service is helping to expand broadband in schools across the country.

Nearly 2,000 rural schools with more than 550,000 students will receive new or improved high-speed Internet service as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Recovery-funded Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP).

While the majority of BIP awards are intended to expand or improve broadband service throughout entire rural communities, including households and businesses, USDA says more than 300 K-12 schools in rural areas currently not served by broadband at all will benefit from the 126 recently announced awards, which total $1.2 billion and will affect 34 states and three Native American Tribal lands. An estimated 82,000 students in will be getting access to high-speed Internet service for the first time.
