M. H. West & Co., Inc, CEO, Marilyn West: All of it doesn’t happen at one time. My advice to clients is not to act too quickly. A lot of the information that continues to come out there still requires a lot of interpretation as to what it means and what it does not mean. Take a careful look and scan what is happening to your organization internally, use findings and play that against what the health-care-reform requirements are once we figure out what everything really means.

“I think whether you agreed or disagreed with health-care reform, we needed something to help us get to another place. We have a law on the books now. We have to figure out a way to strategically respond to it. We have to look at the customers we serve. What are your current capabilities in providing services to them. A lot of the emphasis is on wellness, too, so there’s a lot of education that needs to take place.”

The all day event included many high profile speakers such as: Terry Bradshaw, Rudy Giuliani, Sarah Palin and Colin Powell. Increasing productivity, setting goals and achieving them, take-charge leadership and making it through a crisis were all discussed during the day.

The Get Motivated Seminar has been described by the Washington Post as “The Super Bowl of success”, and it certainly left Justin with a favorable impression. When asked which speaker he found most impressive, Justin replied Colin Powell. He felt Powell’s demeanor and message of leadership inspired the large audience. Justin then added that Rudy Giuliani and Terry Bradshaw also stood out as fine speakers.

H. West & Co., Inc. associate Erica Cage is a member of the Greater Richmond Red Cross Leadership Development Council Class of 2010. Recently, she toured the American Red Cross Disaster Supply Warehouse. Erica commented on the size of the facility, noting that it is as large as 12 football fields. The warehouse can hold enough supplies for 500,000 people for 3 days.

During the tour Erica was able to see how the facility would operate if a disaster were to occur. She also ate an already prepared disaster meal and insisted that the meal tasted better than expected. The tour gave Erica the impression that the Greater Richmond Red Cross was well organized and ready to assist.

Its mission is to advance transformative giving in the Richmond region by uniting women’s ideas and actions through philanthropy. The goal is to change the lives of women and their families by transforming a local nonprofit through a significant, collective financial investment.

The above strategy is well-researched, yet simple: 100 women will give $1,000 each to create a $100,000 grant to be given to a mutually-selected nonprofit. More than 100 women may join, however, which will only increase the impact of the program.

Marilyn West, the CEO of M. H. West & Co., Inc., is proud to count herself among the Impact 100 of Richmond and is eager to see the mission fulfilled. The first grant will be awarded to a local nonprofit in Spring 2010. For more information on this program visit the Impact 100 Richmond website here.
